It is known that you can turn into a villain or a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is powerful, and the story is true to the comic-book plot as well. It also reintroduces the crowd-favourite, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s humorous wit is evident. But, Love and Thunder, although it’s a solid standalone movie, doesn’t perform as well as the previous Thor installment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 10 years, however his standalone films failed to hit the mark completely or did not hit the nail on the head. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a lousy entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a solid start. However, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 is sure to be among everyone’s top five MCU films. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika Waititi collaboration meant expectations were sky-high ahead of the movie’s release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), a god who wants to eliminate all gods attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who has become Mighty Thor. The plot is straightforward, unlike recent Marvel movies and the performances are positive in this film. Hemsworth plays the title character, who’s in middle-age crisis. However, Bale as well as Portman are both outstanding. To show Bale’s capabilities, the pre-title credit scene can be seen. Gorr could have been the new Thanos within the MCU. Bale adds a some eerieness to his role, but there’s nothing else to it.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancer-afflicted exgirlfriend. Marvel appears to be keen on handing over the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to women characters. I had hoped that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the checklist for representation. However, the film builds the story of the astrophysicist, who gets to show off her biceps in several scenes.
Marvel does its own flexing too, through all the cameos featured in this film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast as well as Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles in Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor as well as Thor. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also being portrayed as Hela as well as the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi, who since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his most loved genre, this time. There are hilarious scenes like two noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory Thor breaking his legs, Valkyrie becoming the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
The running gag is that Thor would like to get his Mjolnir but is scared of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. The problem is that these gags although effective, come at the expense of deep emotion , and also expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder is a film that explores many different types of love, from father-daughter bonds to complicated romances between distant lovers… There’s something similar to Gorr losing his respect for Rapu and Thor getting disillusioned with Zeus (played here by Russell Crowe). It’s all great ideas yet…
There are numerous references to movies like Harry Potter and Interstellar, and also Easter eggs. A picture of Falligar, the god who died is revealed, straight from comics. We can see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costumes that comic book readers recognize. When Thor is seen in a fight with Zeus He gets to see a tattoo reading “RIP Loki’ with the helmet of the trickster permanently engraved on our space Viking’s back. The dark Necrosword is revealed, and it’s fascinating how many weapons are shown as being able to control people, especially given how Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own minds.
This is what we saw the ten rings of ShangChi, Ms Marvel’s magical Bangle, and the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. After the show that Marvel recently aired, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but they will never allow you to be empowered” feels relatable. There’s an interesting story about Valkyrie losing her best friend during war, and Korg being in love with another Kronan man.
The first half of the film reminds us of all the color we loved in Ragnarok However, the majority of the second part takes place in the darkness, with everything being monochrome and black. However, it is important to note that the action scenes in monochrome are very enjoyable.
Hemsworth continues to be Thor The news is a relief for MCU fans who’ve seen the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
